CRETE, Neb. - Amanda Vorthmann picked up yet another school record as the Omaha track & field team took part in two meets almost 1,500 miles apart on Friday.
Vorthmann won the 5,000 meters at the Doane College Relays with a time of 17:21.15, leading a pack of four Mavericks who all finished in the top eight. She broke the record of 17:34.75 set by Michelle Ellingson in 2002.
MiKayla Peck was second in the 5,000 at 18:38.32, and Karo Garcia was fourth at 18:58.73, a new personal best. Kristen Carmichael was the fourth top-eight finisher, coming in sixth in a time of 19:21.82.
In the 10,000 meters, Kristin Rogers won the event with a time of 39:27.23, just three seconds shy of her personal best. Kayla Fenske was third in a personal best time of 40:44.66.
Also at Doane, the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Nicole Behm, Lydia Martin, Jackie Mezick and Ashley Kildow finished second in a time of 9:55.12.
In the other meet, the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific, the Mavericks acquitted themselves well against a deep field of Division I and II athletes. Katarina Zarudnaya ran a season-best time of 2:13.08 in the 800 meters to finish ninth. Lauren Psota was just off her personal best with a time of 2:16.22, putting her 38th.
Jessica Ripp set a personal best in the javelin, throwing a distance of 118-03, good for 15th place.
Kathie-Lee Laidley took eighth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.64.
The Mavericks will conclude competition at Doane on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. Those on the West Coast move on to the Beach Track & Field Invitational hosted by Long Beach State at Cerritos College in Norwalk, Calif.
