Mavs End Season with 4-0 Win at Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The UNO softball team closed out a memorable 2013 season with a 4-0 win at Oakland on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks finished the season with a 36-7 overall record and 14-3 mark in their first year in The Summit League. Omaha will finish alone in second place behind North Dakota State. The Mavericks are not eligible for the conference tournament until 2016 as part of their Division I transition. Oakland finished the regular season 7-23-1 overall and 2-15 in league play.
The Mavs' .837 winning percentage is the second best in school history, behind only the 2001 Division II national championship team. Omaha's seven losses are the fewest since six in 2001 and are the second-lowest total when playing 30 or more games in a season. The win was also the 599th win of Head Coach Jeanne Scarpello's career.
The Mavericks broke open a tie game in the top of the sixth with three runs. UNO tacked on one more in the seventh to make it 4-0.
Lindsay Redding and Allie Mathewson got things started in the sixth with back-to-back infield singles. After a pop up bunt, Campbell Ditto singled up the middle to score Redding and move Mathewson to third. Ditto took second on the throw into the infield. Amber Lutmer then doubled to right center to score both Mathewson and Ditto for a 3-0 lead.
In the seventh, Ashton Hughes led off with a single, and Tonya Peterson singled her to second. Redding reached on a fielder's choice that forced out Hughes at third, and Mathewson also grounded into a fielder's choice that put runners on the corners. Tara Trede then recorded an infield single to score Peterson for a 4-0 lead.
Ditto finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Lutmer was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, and she finished the season with a 33-game reached base streak. The last time she didn't reach base in a game was Feb. 17. On the season, she reached base at least once in 40 of 43 games.
Dana Elsasser (21-7) picked up the win, tossing a complete-game four-hit shutout with five strikeouts and no walks. Elsasser picked up her 13th shutout of the season and 24th complete game.
