Mavs Begin Season at New Mexico State, UTEP

The Omaha women's soccer team officially opens the 2013 season in New Mexico and Texas this weekend. The Mavericks play at New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M. Friday at 5 p.m. (Central), then travel to El Paso, Texas for a match at UTEP on Sunday at 2 p.m. (Central). Live stats will be available for both matches at OMavs.com. The Teams
The Mavs went 3-15 overall last season and 3-5 in The Summit League but lose just one player from that squad, forward Danielle Archuleta. UNO earned its three wins in a four-game stretch to begin conference play, but the Mavs dropped the final four games, three of which came by one goal. Omaha returns All-Summit Freshman Team member Hannah Wampler, who put up three goals and one assist in her first year at UNO last season. The Mavs were competitive in dropping two exhibition matches last week, falling to Drake 3-1 on two late goals and to Kansas 1-0.
New Mexico State was 2-14-3 last year with an 0-7-1 mark in the WAC. The Aggies struggled offensively, scoring just eight goals on the season. However, Layla Todd scored four of the goals and returns for NMSU this season.
UTEP went 10-10 last season and 3-8 in Conference USA. The Miners have four of their top five scorers back from last season, including All-Conference USA honorees Tori Martyn (3g, 4a) and Azia Nicholson (6g, 3a). Overall, nine starters and 14 letterwinners are back for the Miners.

Last Time Out
The UNO women's soccer team played its second and final exhibition match last Sunday, falling at Kansas 1-0. The Jayhawks scored the lone goal of the game on a penalty kick by Liana Salazar in the 20th minute. The Mavs attacked aggressively in the second half in search of an equalizer, registering all five of their shot attempts in the half, but couldn't tie the match. KU finished with a 26-5 shots advantage and 9-0 margin in shots on goal. Meaghan Clark made eight saves for the Mavericks.
