Mavs Cap Preseason With Red/Black Scrimmage

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha volleyball team completed its preseason preparations for the 2013 season on Saturday night, hosting its annual Red/Black Scrimmage at Sapp Fieldhouse.
Players switched between both teams over four sets, with Omaha Black winning the match, 3-1. Black swept the first three sets -- 27-25, 26-24, 25-22 -- before an additional fourth set, which Omaha Red won, 15-10.
Sophomore Michaela Schimmer finished with a triple-double for the day with 11 kills, 17 assists and 10 digs, along with two blocks. Sophomore Bailey Baxter also had a double-double with a match-leading 33 assists and 16 digs, while sophomore Kelley Wollak's double-double effort came on a match-best 15 kills and 11 digs. Freshman Nicki Carson also tallied a double-double on 24 assists and 11 digs.
Sophomore Diane Banderas led the way at the net with four blocks, and junior Rachelle Kruml chipped in 15 digs with a match-best four service aces. Sophomore Kimberly Bailey had a strong defensive showing with 21 digs for the day. Sophomore Amy Taylor added eight kills and three blocks, and fellow sophomore Megan Schmale had six kills, two blocks and two aces.
In addition, three freshmen had solid debut outings: Kristy Wieser (eight kills, nine digs and two blocks), Elise Brown (12 kills, seven digs) and Amanda Conlin (six kills, three blocks).
"This match was very indicative of our preseason: extremely competitive, very tight in terms of player-for-player competition," head coach Rose Shires said. "That's tremendous for us in that we are very deep. We have the opportunity to have a lot of weapons, and on any given day, we can really have a lot of variety in who we use and what we do. We really started moving our offense around tonight and got a lot smoother as the match went on.
"I thought Kimberly Bailey did a solid job as libero, and Kelley Wollak did a very steady job on the outside. Nicki Carson also really stepped up. She not only set a great game, she hit a great game. I think she really showed us a lot tonight as well."
Omaha makes its season debut next weekend, traveling to the Houston Baptist Tournament, Aug. 30-31, in Houston, Texas. The Mavericks open with host Houston Baptist on Friday at 7 p.m., followed by two Saturday matches against UT-Pan American at Noon and Louisiana at 5 p.m.
