Mavericks Dominant in Sweeps of Stetson, Southern

HAMMOND, La. – The Omaha volleyball team closed out the Tangi Tourism Lion Classic in a big way on Saturday, recording 3-0 sweeps of Stetson (25-17, 25-23, 25-22) and Southern (25-17, 25-22, 25-17). The Mavericks are now 4-6 (0-0 Summit League).
MATCH 1 – OMAHA 3, STETSON 0
In the first match of the day, sophomore Kelley Wollak led Omaha with 11 kills, and freshman Kristy Wieser was close behind with 10 of her own. Sophomores Kimberly Bailey and Michaela Schimmer finished with 15 digs and 12 digs, respectively, and sophomore Bailey Baxter had 23 assists to top the Mavericks.
Sophomore Diane Banderas, who hit .700 with no errors, and Schimmer each added seven kills apiece, and sophomore Megan Schmale led UNO at the net with five blocks.
As a team, Omaha finished with a .212 attack percentage -- its highest of the season – and held Stetson to a .055 team hitting performance. The Hatters were paced by 10 kills from Tiffany Creamer and 20 assists from Kayla Weller.
The first set proved close early on, as the two squads hit tied scores seven times before Omaha went ahead permanently. Sitting at 14-14, four Stetson attack errors plus kills from Schimmer and Wieser spotted UNO a 19-14 lead. Another Wieser kill made it 20-15, and a Schimmer ace pushed it to 22-15. Wollak's final kill gave Omaha the game, 25-17, as well as a 1-0 lead.
In set two, the Hatters broke a 13-13 tie and went up 22-20. UNO roared back though, going on a 5-1 run to clinch the win. After a Stetson service error, a Baxter ace and kills from Banderas and Wollak made it 24-22. Stetson dropped in one last kill from Creamer, but Wollak had the last word with a kill of her own to snag the win at 25-23.
The third game saw Omaha hit .256 to Stetson's .049, led by five kills on perfect 1.000 hitting from Banderas and another four from Wollak. After wrangling out of an 11-11 tie, the Mavericks never trailed, taking a 25-22 win and clinching a 3-0 sweep of the Hatters.
MATCH 2 – OMAHA 3, SOUTHERN 0
In the Mavericks' tournament finale, Baxter came through with a double-double on 20 assists and 12 digs. Bailey had another double-figure dig effort with 11 against the Jaguars, and Schmale was Omaha's leader with eight kills and four blocks. Wieser hit .857 with no errors in the second match, finishing with six kills.
Omaha outhit Southern .161 to -.020 and outblocked the Jaguars 9-6.
The opening game saw the score tie at 12-12 before a 5-0 run pushed UNO ahead, helped by kills from Banderas and Schimmer, as well as a block from the sophomore duo. Southern cut it to 19-17, but six straight points sealed the Mavericks' win at 25-17, punctuated by a block from Schmale and sophomore Amy Taylor.
Omaha ran out to a 12-7 advantage on a Schimmer kill in the second set, forcing a Southern timeout. The Mavericks later took an 18-8 lead with an 8-1 run, but the Jaguars chipped away to make it a three-point match at 23-20. Banderas and junior Jessy Schroedter then put down a block to spur Southern's final timeout, and after a kill by SU's Marisol Macias and a Maverick attack error, Banderas put away the set with a kill for a final tally of 25-22.
UNO capitalized on shaky hitting from Southern in the last set, as the Jaguars had just three kills and 10 errors to hit -.280. With seven Southern errors, Omaha took a 10-2 lead early. The Jaguars flirted with tying the set at 14-13 before finally stalling it at 15-15. A Schroedter kill and three straight attack errors from Southern put UNO in the lead, 19-15, and the Mavs used four straight Southern errors and a service ace from Wollak to close out the set, 25-17, and the match, 3-0.
Omaha returns to action Sept. 19-21, traveling to the Nike Invitational in Norman, Okla. The Mavericks open with host Oklahoma on Thursday, followed by a single match against Miami (Fla.) on Friday and contests against LIU Brooklyn and Tulsa on Saturday.
