Mar 8, 2014 | Women's Tennis
OMAHA, Neb.—The Maverick women's tennis team picked up its second win of the season on Saturday, defeating Kansas Wesleyan 7-0 at Hanscom Brandeis Tennis Center. The victory improves Omaha's record to 2-6 (0-0 Summit League), while the Coyotes fall to 0-2 (0-0 KCAC).
The Mavs took care of business early in the match, winning all three doubles matches and the doubles point. At No. 1, sophomores Molly Matricardi and Tiffany Hottman beat Cassidy Cook and Sydney Reese, 8-0. Freshmen Hylan Miller and Allison Johnson also teamed up to win 8-0 at No. 2 doubles over Valerie Zuaznabar and Maria Rodriguez while Lindsay Weideman and Maddie Holscher picked up the win at No. 3 doubles by forfeit.
It was the same story for UNO in singles play. Starting at No. 1, Alex Tran set the tone with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Cook. That momentum continued through the rest of singles play, with two other Mavericks – Weideman at No. 2 and Hottman at No. 4 – winning 6-0, 6-0 over their opponents. The other Omaha wins came from Jacqueline Baude at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-2, and Holscher at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-4. Johnson picked up the final win for UNO, winning No. 6 singles by forfeit.
Omaha returns to action tomorrow for a 2:30 p.m. match at Hanscom Brandeis Tennis Center against in-state foe Hastings College.
