NDSU Sweeps Doubleheader From Mavericks

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha baseball team finished its weekend series with North Dakota State on Saturday, doomed by a combined seven errors in two losses to the Bison, 5-4 and 9-7, at the Ballpark at Boys Town. The Mavericks are now 21-16 (6-6 Summit League), while the Bison improve to 15-18 (6-8 Summit League).
GAME 1 -- NORTH DAKOTA STATE 5, OMAHA 4
Senior Caleb Palensky led the Mavericks offensively in the early game, finishing with two hits and an RBI. Senior Brett Bass was 1-for-4 with a run scored and another driven in, and sophomore Clayton Taylor went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Sophomore Cole Gruber also went 1-for-3, scored once and stole two bases.
The win went to NDSU starter Parker Trewin (4-1), who threw 6.2 innings and allowed four runs on five hits and six walks while striking out six. Sophomore Marcus Ethen (3-2) took the loss, surrendering two runs on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Trevor Jaunich picked up his fourth save of the year by throwing the final third of an inning, allowing one hit with a K.
Neither team scored in the first four and a half innings, as Ethen allowed just one hit -- a double by Kyle Kleinendorst in the first inning -- in that span. UNO scored first in the fifth, when Gruber drew a two-out walk, stole second and came across on Taylor's RBI double down the right field line.
The 1-0 lead was short-lived, as NDSU totaled four runs on no hits and two Maverick errors in the next half-inning. The Bison added another run in the seventh when Omaha native Aiden Hook walked, advanced to third with Tim Colwell's double down the left field line and later scored when Kleinendorst was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Down 5-1, the Mavericks rallied in the seventh with a trio of runs on two hits. Taylor and junior Justin Threlkeld both walked, and Bass came up with a two-out, two-run double down the left field line to score both. Following a pitching change, Palensky singled to left to plate Bass and brought the score to 5-4, but Jaunich got a strikeout on the next batter to end the game.
GAME 2 -- NORTH DAKOTA STATE 9, OMAHA 7
Palensky had another multi-hit performance in the second game, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Gruber was 1-for-2 with a run, an RBI, two walks and two more stolen bases, bringing his total to four bags swiped for the day. Sophomore Danny Suiter, making a pinch hitting appearance in the bottom of the ninth, sent out his first career home run with a two-run shot to left.
Reed Pfannenstein (2-0) recorded the win for NDSU, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits and four walks with a pair of Ks. Sophomore Cole Volkers (2-2) was tagged with the loss, surrendering six runs (four earned), six hits and two walks with two strikeouts in his outing. Kevin Folman earned his first save of the year by throwing the final four innings, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk with four strikeouts.
NDSU took a quick 3-0 lead with four hits in the top of the first inning. Omaha came back for a single run in the bottom of the fame, as Gruber scored when sophomore Alex Schultz reached on a fielding error.
After adding two runs in the second, the Bison pushed it to 6-1 in the third when John Skrbec tallied a run on Andrew Wicklund's two-out single.
In the fourth, UNO rebounded with three runs on four hits, started off with a Bass double to left center and a Palensky single to left. Jewett came up with a sacrifice fly to score Bass, and senior Tyler Splichal's sacrifice bunt brought in Palensky. Three batters later, Gruber delivered a two-out RBI single up the middle to cross freshman Mark Handberg, bringing it to 6-4.
The Bison chipped in two runs on two hits in the fifth. Kleinendorst scored on a double to right center by David Ernst, and Ernst came in with Jon Hechtner's immediate single to left center that put NDSU up 8-4.
In the later half of the frame, the Mavericks tallied one run to make it 8-5. Schultz got on base with a one-out single to right center, stole second and was driven in with Palensky's two-out RBI single to right.
After North Dakota State went up 9-5 in the top of the eighth, Omaha threatened in the bottom of the ninth. Splichal drew a leadoff walk, and three batters later, Suiter delivered his homer to cut it to a two-run ballgame. Taylor then singled to center, but Folman registered a final strikeout to end the game with a score of 9-7 and give NDSU the doubleheader sweep.
