OMAHA, Neb. – Junior college transfer Tim Smallwood has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Omaha men's basketball program in 2014-15, head coach Derrin Hansen announced Wednesday.
Smallwood comes to the Mavericks after playing two seasons for coach Randy Rutherford at Murray State College in Tishomingo, Oklahoma. As a freshman in 2011-12, he averaged 19 points, three assists and two rebounds per game, and he garnered freshman of the year and all-tournament second team recognition. Smallwood followed up in his sophomore year in 2012-13 with 16 points, five rebounds and four assists per game, and he was named to the all-tournament first team.
Previously, Smallwood played for coach Ryan Wakely at Victory Christian School, where he averaged 22.3 points, five boards, four steals and three assists per game over his career. Smallwood was named the Tulsa Metro Player of the Year was the Tulsa Parks All-Star Game Most Valuable Player. He was also an Elite 8 nominee and a two-time player of the week honoree.
"Tim provides us with some depth in the backcourt," Hansen said. "Not only can he play the wing, but he can play some point as well. Tim had a strong junior college career at Murray State College, as he put up some very good numbers there and in high school. He then took the 2013-14 school year to take care of some academic requirements to become Division I eligible. We're excited to have Tim in our program, and he will add a lot of value to our basketball team as we move toward full Division I eligibility."
