Mavs Finish Preseason With Red/Black Scrimmage

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha volleyball team finished its 2014 preseason preparations on Saturday night, playing host to its annual Red/Black Scrimmage at Sapp Fieldhouse.
Players switched between both teams over four sets, tying at 2-2. Omaha Red won the first set, 25-23, before Omaha Black took the second, 25-22. In the third, Red went ahead with a 25-23 victory, but Black evened it in the final game, 25-20.
Junior Kelley Wollak had a match-best 12 kills, 11 digs and three blocks, while freshman Mackenzie Horkey also had double-figure kills with 10. Junior Megan Schmale had 10 blocks to lead the match, and sophomore Nicki Carson and redshirt freshman Amanda Conlin each added eight stops. Carson also had 10 digs, 11 assists and seven kills.
Freshman Sydney O'Shaughnessy totaled a match-leading 28 assists with 10 digs, and junior Michaela Schimmer posted 20 assists, eight digs, six kills and a pair of blocks.
Junior Kimberly Bailey also had 21 digs, while freshman Aftyn Johnson had another 17 and freshman Emily Leichner chipped in 14. Senior Jessy Schroedter accounted for 10 kills and two blocks on the night, and junior Diane Banderas finished with eight kills and three stops at the net.
"I felt all four of our middles played very well today, and they stayed in every play," head coach Rose Shires said. "I was also extremely pleased overall with our defense. We kept a lot of balls in play and were able to run an offense off of our transition game. Kelley Wollak also did a very good job as a pin hitter, scoring in critical situations at the end of the match.
"I look forward to what this team will bring this season. After tonight, it's still difficult to choose starters because things have been very even in practice, and I think we'll see continued competition for starting positions throughout the season. We are very excited to play our first match against Central Michigan next weekend."
Omaha opens the 2014 season by hosting the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Omaha Classic, Aug. 29-30, welcoming Central Michigan, Drake and UMKC for six matches at Sapp Fieldhouse.
