
Mavericks Nab First Victory, 7-0 Over NWU

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha women's tennis picked up its first win of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating Nebraska Wesleyan 7-0 at Miracle Hill Golf & Tennis Center. UNO is now 1-1 (0-0 Summit League) on the season, while the Prairie Wolves fall to 0-2 (0-0 GPAC).
The Mavericks began the day with a No. 1 doubles victory by junior Molly Matricardi and sophomore Kenzie Hill, as the two earned a win over Natalie Cech and Katherine Ternent, 6-2. In No. 2 doubles, senior Jacqueline Baude and sophomore Maddie Holscher were defeated by Gaby Chaparro and Jennifer Heywood, 6-4. Sophomores Allison Johnson and Rebecca Stafford won their No. 3 doubles match 6-0 over Courtney Harder and Jaime Bridges, sealing the doubles point for UNO.
Omaha followed suit in singles play, picking up all six points. Freshman Michelle Lo opened at No.1, winning her match 6-0, 6-0 for her first collegiate win. At No. 2, Matricardi picked up her first win of the season, besting Chaparro, 4-6, 6-1, 10-1.
Baude (No. 3 – 6-1, 6-0), Hill (No. 4 – 6-1, 6-0), Stafford (No. 5 – 6-3, 6-0) and Johnson (No. 6 – 6-0, 6-0) also secured their first singles triumphs of the year.
“Our players were very efficient with how they took care of business on the court against Nebraska Wesleyan,” head coach Mike Saniuk. “I'm proud of their effort today.”
The Mavs return to action on Friday, Jan. 30, visiting Iowa State. The match is slated for a 2 p.m. start time in Ames, Iowa.
