Holtmann Scores Game Winner in Double Overtime

OMAHA, Neb. – Sophomore Lydia Holtmann came through in the clutch for the Omaha women's soccer team on Friday evening, scoring the game-winning goal in the 101st minute to defeat IUPUI 2-1 at Caniglia Field.
The Mavericks improved to 4-7-2 overall and 1-2 in Summit League play. IUPUI had its four game unbeaten streak snapped while dropping to 5-5-2 overall and 0-1-1 in conference.
IUPUI had the first scoring chance of the match in the 8th minute. Â Alyssa Fox was able to get a shot off, but it hit the cross bar and bounced out of play.
The Mavericks' first scoring chance came in the 13th minute when Emily Romero forced Jaguar goalkeeper Catherine Schmidt to make a save. Less than 30 seconds later, Chelsi Rohloff's shot missed wide.
Rohloff got behind the IUPUI defense in the 23rd minute. She cut the ball into the center of the penalty area, beating three defenders and buried her shot into the back of the net to give Omaha the lead, 1-0.
Holtmann almost had her first goal of the match in the 31st minute, but Schmidt came up with a great effort to make the save.
IUPUI's Krissy Kirkhoff leveled the score in the 32nd minute. Kalli Shepler-Tucker played a through ball over the UNO defense to Kirkhoff. Kirkhoff slipped a shot under Katlyn Schochenmaier for her eighth goal of the season.
The two teams went into the half tied, 1-1.
Each team exchanged multiple scoring opportunities in the second half, however neither squad would find the back of the net. Rohloff hit the crossbar in the 54th minute and Jessica Bollinger's follow up shot went high.
Ava Doetsch played a corner kick into the box in the 59th minute that created four scoring chances for UNO. Bollinger's header was punched out by Schmidt. Abby Hansen had two shots cleared off the line by the IUPUI defense. Emily Romero's shot was gathered by Schmidt to prevent any more chances.
Nyoke Dumba hit the post and Holtmann pinged a shot off the cross bar in the 73rd minute, but neither shot bounced Omaha's way. Regulation ended with the two sides still knotted, 1-1.
In the opening moments of the first overtime period, IUPUI's Samantha Bathurst's header nearly found the back of the net, but Schochenmaier was able to make the save.
Omaha put an end to the game less than 90 seconds into the second overtime period. Dumba received a pass from midfield and deftly laid it off to Rohloff. Rohloff took a quick touch before finding Holtmann. Holtmann was there to place the ball perfectly into the back of the net to send Omaha home with its first win over IUPUI in its last four meetings.
UNO held a 21-8 advantage in shots and an 8-4 lead in shots on goal. Omaha held a 5-0 lead in corner kicks. Schochenmaier made three saves for the Mavs, while Schmidt made six saves for the Jaguars.
The Mavericks will return to action on Sunday with a Summit League match-up at Fort Wayne. Kickoff is set for 10:30 a.m. (CT) at Hefner Soccer Complex. Links to live stats and video are available at OMavs.com.
