
Mavericks Conclude Season with Senior Night Setback

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women's soccer team concluded its season against Denver on Friday evening at Caniglia Field. The Pioneers scored the game's only goal midway through the second half for the 1-0 win.
Omaha came out the aggressor in the first half. Kyla Booker had a scoring chance in the first 90 seconds, but her header floated over the bar.Â
Denver responded to the UNO intensity with their best scoring chance in the seventh minute. Karina Fredette's shot was on target, but Haley Shelton made the stop. Â
Chelsi Rohloff had the first good look of the game for the Mavs in the 10th minute, but the Pioneers' Cassidy Rey made the save. Moments later, Hannah Wampler's shot on goal was blocked by a DU defender.
Rohloff again forced Rey to make a save on a shot in the 18th minute. Courtney Neville's scoring chance in the 21st minute was snuffed out by Rey.Â
The Pioneers' Riley Welch put a shot on target that found Shelton's hands in the 42nd minute.
Emily Romero got behind the Denver defense in the final minute of the first half, but her shot was just wide. The two teams went into the half level, 0-0.
Omaha was on the attack early in the second half. Layla Ashouri's corner kick found the head of Abby Hansen, but sailed over the crossbar.
Welch scored the game's lone goal in the 62nd minute. Leah Swander was able to get around an Omaha defender and get off a cross that found Welch. Welch settled the cross and placed her shot into the left corner for the score.
Wampler had a chance to even the score in the final seconds of the game, but Rey was able to make the save and give Denver the 1-0 victory.
The Pioneers held a slight advantage in shots, 9-8, but both teams managed four shots on goal. Rohloff and Wampler each had two shots for Omaha. UNO held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Shelton made three saves in the defeat, while Rey stopped four shots to earn the shutout.
Prior to the match Omaha honored the eight seniors on the team Layla Ashouri, Kyla Booker, Courtney Neville, Marquette Pick, Chelsi Rohloff, Haley Shelton, Hannah Wampler, and Morgan Westenburg.
Omaha ends the season with a 5-12-2 overall record and a 2-6 mark in league play.
