Mavs Dominate Play but Lose 1-0 to Jackrabbits

BROOKINGS, South Dakota – The Omaha women's soccer team controlled possession throughout the game on Sunday afternoon in Brookings, South Dakota, but dropped a Summit League match to South Dakota State, 1-0.
The loss dropped Omaha to 3-7-2 overall and 0-2-0 in Summit League play, while South Dakota State improved to 6-4-1 overall and 1-0-0 in league play.
For the third consecutive game, the Mavericks were scoreless at the half. They dominated the play in the second half, but could not take advantage of their possession advantage.
In the 69th minute, a shot by Chelsi Rohloff went just wide of the goal.
Omaha had two chances to take the lead in the 72nd minute. Emily Romero sent a corner kick into the box that found the head of Jessica Bollinger. Bollinger's header was cleared off the line by a SDSU defender. Seconds later, Hannah Wampler had her shot attempt blocked by another defender.
A South Dakota State foul near midfield led to Omaha's best scoring chance of the game. Ava Doetsch played a free kick to Rohloff. Rohloff flicked the ball to Courntey Neville who got behind the Jackrabbit defense. Neville's shot attempt floated over the crossbar and the score remained tied.
SDSU scored the game's lone goal in the 82nd minute. Nicole Hatcher picked up a loose ball in the Jackrabbit offensive third and made a move toward goal. Hatcher cut to her right, which caused an Omaha defender to slip on the wet turf and placed the shot to the lower left corner. Katlyn Schochenmaier made a valiant effort, but could not get a hand on the ball.
The Mavericks had two shots to tie things up in the final five minute. Marin Dregelid's shot in the 86th minute was blocked and Neville's shot was saved by Nicole Inskeep.
South Dakota State outshot Omaha 15-10 on the afternoon. Wampler led the Mavericks with three shots, while Neville and Rohloff each had two.
Schochenmaier made three saves in the loss for Omaha. SDSU's Inskeep made one save.
The Mavericks return to action on Friday, Oct. 9 against IUPUI. Kickoff from Caniglia Field is set for 7 p.m.
