Bullpen Banter: Road Trippin'
Feb 19, 2015 | Baseball
Sam Murphy is a junior left-handed pitcher for the Omaha baseball team. A broadcast journalism major from Lake Worth, Fla., Sam will write posts throughout the season for his blog, “Bullpen Banter,” available exclusively on OMavs.com.
From gate B16 at Eppley…
It's mid-February, which means baseball season is in full swing - no pun intended.
Phoenix was spectacular last weekend; the weather was a nice change from this cold spell we have here in the heartland. Grand Canyon University is a sight to see; unbeknown to most, GCU is the only for-profit university in the U.S., and it's a gorgeous setting for a college campus. And to top it all off, we got to play some ball…finally.
Opening weekend didn't go as planned, but progress was certainly made. For cold-weather schools like UNO, it can be tough to get acclimated to being outside. It's a whole new ballgame from the inside game. Coach Herold mentioned to us following the Grand Canyon game on Saturday that he spoke to their coach beforehand and they had already played 18 intrasquad games prior to their season opener, whereas we hadn't played any due to the weather forcing us to practice inside.
Now, it's off to the good ol' south -- Atlanta, Ga., to be exact -- where we'll take on Chicago State for three games at the Perfect Game Complex in brisk Emerson, Ga. You'd think going south means warmer temps, but not this weekend. The Atlanta area is expecting temperatures in the mid-40s for our stay, so we'll see how it goes. Chicago State is no stranger to us, as the we have faced each other multiple times last year and will play the Cougars again next week in Port Charlotte, Fla.
This is the start of 12 games in 14 days for us as we won't be back in Omaha for more than 24 hours until March 5. Check out a glimpse of what the next two weeks look like for us below.
