Bullpen Banter: Healing Powers
Mar 21, 2015 | Baseball
Sam Murphy is a junior left-handed pitcher for the Omaha baseball team. A broadcast journalism major from Lake Worth, Fla., Sam will write posts throughout the season for his blog, "Bullpen Banter," available exclusively on OMavs.com.
I'm back!
I apologize to those loyal readers who look forward to my weekly postings. There's a reason behind my lack of updates, though, as you'll find out in this post. For the past four-ish weeks it's been almost impossible for me to do anything with my left hand –including the one thing I need to be able to do for this blog: type on a keyboard. A lot has happened since the last time I wrote.
Back on Feb. 10 – the day my first and only "Bullpen Banter" was posted – everything was looking up; we were sitting at Eppley Airfield gearing up for a 14-day journey south to better weather. Not to mention, everyone on the team was HEALTHY. That phrase quickly backfired.
It all started in Atlanta, where yours truly entered the game for a relief appearance in the third and final game against Chicago State. Then, right as my season started, it was done. A line drive was crushed back up the middle and my left hand, unfortunately, was in the way. The ball struck my pinky finger and ricocheted all the way to first base in time to retire the batter, but the damage had been done. X-rays later revealed two fractures (breaks) in my pinky, and I've been sidelined since.
Meanwhile, the reigning Summit League Tournament champion, North Dakota State, invades Omaha this weekend for a huge conference clash at Boys Town. You know the Bison will be fired up to play us; for one, we're two-time regular season champs. Two, we're sitting unblemished atop the conference standings, currently at 4-0. The weather should be delightful and admission is always free, so there are no excuses to not enjoy a day at the ballpark!
As always, if you have any feedback, I'd love to hear it – you can shoot me a tweet @SamMurphy_17. Thanks for reading, and I'll be back with you soon.
God Bless and Go Mavs,
Sam
