Jackrabbits Run Past Omaha, 12-2

BROOKINGS, S.D. -- The Omaha baseball team dropped its weekend finale at South Dakota State Sunday afternoon, falling 12-2 in seven innings. With the loss, the Mavericks are now 17-19 (10-8 Summit League), while the Jackrabbits improve to 24-14 (11-7 Summit League) with their ninth win in 10 games.
Junior Clayton Taylor and senior Justin Threlkeld led the Mavericks at the plate, going an identical 2-for-3. Taylor also scored once and drove in two runs with his team-leading fifth home run of the season.
On the mound, SDSU starter Ryan Froom (4-2) threw a complete game en route to victory. Froom tossed all 7.0 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts. The loss went to sophomore right-hander Shane Meltz, who surrendered nine runs (seven earned) on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts.
South Dakota State had four players with multiple hits for the day: Matt Johnson (3-for-4, two runs, five RBI), Reid Clary (3-for-4, two runs, two RBI), Luke Ringhofer (2-for-3, two runs) and Cody Sharrow (2-for-4). As a team, SDSU finished with 14 hits.
The Jackrabbits jumped out to a fast lead in the bottom of the first inning, plating five runs on four hits and an error. They added four runs on a trio of hits in the second inning to hold a steep 9-0 advantage.
Senior right-hander Tyler Hamer threw four innings of scoreless relief from the third through the sixth, but it was not enough to overcome the Jacks. Omaha finally broke up Froom's shutout and got on the board in the sixth, taking advantage of two Jackrabbit errors and scoring two runs on two hits. With one out, junior Cole Gruber singled to center, which was followed immediately by Taylor's two-run bomb to right that cut it to 9-2.
South Dakota State, however, closed it off in the seventh, notching three runs on three hits and an error. With two outs, Zach Coppola dropped a two-run single into center that drove in Eric Danforth and Al Robbins, and Coppola scored on a fielding error, which ended the game due to the 10-run rule with a 12-2 final score.
Omaha returns to action on Tuesday, April 21, traveling to crosstown rival Creighton. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. at TD Ameritrade Park, and links to live stats and audio will be available on OMavs.com.
