Women's Soccer Ties Northern Iowa, 1-1

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women's soccer team battled through two overtime periods to earn 1-1 draw with the Northern Iowa Panthers on Friday night at Caniglia Field.
Northern Iowa struck for the game's first goal in 14th minute as Annie Dale pounced on a defensive giveaway outside of the penalty box. Dale placed her shot just out of the reach of Omaha goalkeeper Haley Shelton to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
Omaha tied the score on a shot from outside the 18-yard box with just five minutes to play in the first half. Lauren Lawler intercepted a UNI pass and found Lydia Holtmann, and she beat the Panther keeper to make it 1-1.
Shelton saved a Brynell Yount shot as the first half ended to preserve the tie.
Chelsi Rohloff had a chance to give Omaha the lead in the 71st minute, but the UNI keeper made a sliding stop. UNI's Katie Witt had a chance for the game winner with under five minutes left in regulation, but Shelton denied the opportunity.
Regulation ended in a 1-1 tie, and Rohloff had two shots at a potential winning goal, but both attempts trickled wide. Meredith McManaman had the lone Panther shot in the second overtime, but it was stopped by Shelton.
With the tie, the Mavericks improve to 0-1-1 on the season, while the Panthers are 1-0-2.
Northern Iowa outshot Omaha 18-16 and held a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. Rohloff led Omaha with seven shots, while Holtmann added five. Shelton had six saves for the Mavericks.
Omaha returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 30 against Northern Illinois. Game time is set for 11 a.m. at Caniglia Field.
