Omaha Sweeps Past Seton Hall in Season Opener

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Omaha volleyball team started the 2015 season strong Friday afternoon, sweeping past Seton Hall 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-17) at the UNLV Invitational at Cox Pavilion.
Sophomore setter Sydney O'Shaughnessy registered a double-double on 30 assists and 10 digs, adding five kills, two aces and a block. Senior outside hitter Kelley Wollak led the match with 10 kills, in addition to five digs, three assists and a block.
Sophomore outside hitter Mackenzie Horkey chipped in eight kills and a team-high 12 digs, as well as two blocks. Senior rightside hitter Michaela Schimmer had six kills, nine digs and a match-high six stops at the net. Senior middle blocker Amy Taylor matched Schimmer with six kills and six blocks of her own, hitting at a team-leading .385 clip.
As a team, Omaha hit .183 to Seton Hall's .138 and outblocked the Pirates 10.5 to five.
Seton Hall was led by eight kills from Amanda Hansen, who hit .438 for the day, in addition to her four blocks.
In the opening set, Omaha ran out to a 16-9 lead with kills from Taylor and Schimmer and a Schimmer ace that prompted a Pirate timeout. The Mavericks then stretched it to 22-16, punctuated with back-to-back kills by Horkey and Wollak, which brought another Seton Hall timeout. The Pirates came out of the break to go on a 6-0 run that tied the game at 22-22, but a Taylor kill righted the ship in UNO's favor. Though SHU hit .317 for the game, a late Pirate attack error made it set point and after one last Seton Hall score, a kill from senior middle blocker Megan Schmale put it away for a 25-23 win.
The Mavericks commanded the second set with their effort at the net, outblocking SHU 5-3. Omaha surged to a quick 14-8 lead, then worked out to an 18-10 advantage. Seton Hall then went on an 8-1 run that cut it to 19-18, but the Mavericks rallied with four straight scores to take a 23-18 lead. Wollak finished off the game for UNO, as her final kill sealed the set win at 25-22.
In the third set, Seton Hall put up a fight early for a 5-5 tie, but Omaha pushed ahead on two consecutive Wollak kills. The Pirates managed to get within one at 11-10, after which UNO used a 4-1 run to move to a 15-11 lead. Later, two Seton Hall attack errors coupled with a Taylor kill made it 20-14. Another Taylor kill, followed by an SHU attack error and back-to-back blocks by Taylor/Horkey and Taylor/Schimmer brought it to match point at 24-16. Two plays later, Taylor was the one to finish it, pounding a kill for the 25-17 set win and the 3-0 sweep.
Omaha returns to action on Saturday, Aug. 29 at the UNLV Invitational, facing host UNLV at Noon (CT) and Central Arkansas at 6:30 p.m. (CT). Links to live stats for both matches and live video for the UNLV match only will be available on OMavs.com.
MATCH NOTES
-Seton Hall finished the 2014 season as runner-up in the BIG EAST Conference and made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
-Freshman defensive specialist Jessica Plake made her collegiate debut on Friday, appearing in one set.
-O'Shaughnessy's double-double was the 20th of her Maverick career.
