Mavs Come from Behind to Top Northern Illinois, 2-1

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women's soccer team won its first game of the season in come-from-behind fashion on Sunday morning over Northern Illinois, 2-1. The Mavericks improve to 1-1-1 on the season, while the Huskies fall to 1-3.
Northern Illinois grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 9th minute as Taylor Sarver scored her first goal of the season. Omaha goalkeeper Haley Shelton punched out a cross from the Huskies, but the ball bounced to Sarver who poked home a shot into the open goal.
The Huskies had another scoring attempt in the 44th minute, but Shelton came up with save. Seconds later, Shelton was shaken up on a collision in the goal and was replaced by Katelyn Schochenmaier.
In the second half, Northern Illinois continued to pressure the Omaha defense, but could not add to its lead.
The Mavericks broke through in the 73rd minute as Kyla Booker booted home the equalizer for her first score of the season. Emily Michaels sent a ball from midfield that bounced over a Northern Illinois defender allowing Booker to run onto the ball. After a quick touch, Booker fired a right-footed shot that went over the Huskies' goalkeeper.
Marin Dregelid gave the home side a 2-1 lead in the 78th minute with her first career goal. Hannah Wampler earned her first assist of the season with the pass. The sophomore fired a shot from outside the penalty box that snuck by the Northern Illinois goalkeeper's finger tips and inside the right post for the game-winner.
Northern Illinois had four shots inside the penalty area in the closing minutes of the game, but were unable to even the score.
Omaha finished the game with 10 total shots with six being on goal. Northern Illinois attempted 16 shots with just six being on frame.
Shelton allowed one goal and made two saves for the Mavericks before leaving the game in the first half. Schochenmaier played the final 46 minutes in goal and earned her first career win with the Mavericks. She made three saves, including a diving save in the waning moments of the second half.
Mackenzie Lee allowed two goals and made four saves in net for Northern Illinois.
Looking ahead, UNO visits Creighton at Morrison Stadium on Friday, Sept. 4 at 5:00 p.m. The Mavericks also play at North Dakota on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 12:00 p.m.
