Mavs Fall to Minnesota, 9-1

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Freshman Kelsey Stithem scored her first career goal as the Mavericks fell to Minnesota 9-1 at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Mavericks are now 2-3-2 on the season. The Golden Gophers improved to 5-1-2 overall.
Minnesota controlled the match from the outset peppering the Mavericks' with shots throughout the contest. In the first half, the Golden Gophers had the majority of possession and scored seven goals in the half.
Omaha played a stronger second half limiting Minnesota to only five shots. Rachel McClosky scored an unassisted goal in the 70th minute to increase the Minnesota lead to 8-0. Omaha avoided the shutout when Courtney Neville played a pass into Stithem who paced a shot beyond the reach of Mara Dougherty in the 88th minute. The Golden Gophers added a goal in the 90th minute to make the final 9-1.
Minnesota had eight different goal scorers in the game. Megan Koenig scored twice in the first half for the home team. Overall, they attempted 15 shots to just two for Omaha.
Goalkeeper Katlyn Schochenmaier made two saves in the first half. Haley Shelton made one save for Omaha in the second half.
Omaha returns home to open a three-game homestand starting next Friday, Sept. 18 against Colorado State at 7 p.m.
