Big First Day Has Mavs On Top at Grinnell Invite

GRINNELL, Iowa – The Omaha swimming & diving team thwarted the competition at the Grinnell Invite Friday, picking up 630 points to lead the team standings after day one at BEAR Recreation and Athletics Center.
A pair of Omaha sophomores started the evening on the right note in the 200 IM. Olivia McLain cruised to a first-place finish (2:13.09), while classmate Hilary Schieffer took third place (2:16.38).
The sophomore class then continued its dominance, as Norfolk, Neb., native Kaitlin Harthoorn took the top spot in the 200 fly (2:16.20). McLain added to her career night in the 100 IM, as the Kansas City, Mo., product took second with a time of 1:00.99.
The 800 free relay team swam to a dominant victory, as the quartet of Schieffer, sophomores Logan Back and Cassie Jahn and freshman Kylie Vermeire finished nearly six seconds ahead of the pack at 8:00.65.
Senior Natalie Renshaw fled her usual short distance focus and triumphed in the 500 free, finishing in a time of 5:08.94.
Sophomore diver Monica Houck also had a strong performance in the 3-meter (11 dives), delivering a victorious total score of 391.05.
The Mavericks close the Grinnell Invite on Saturday, Jan. 23 from the BEAR Recreation and Athletics Center at 5 p.m. in Grinnell, Iowa.
