Fox's Complete Game Leads Omaha Past SDSU, 4-1

OMAHA, Neb. -- Behind a complete-game mound effort from senior right-hander Tyler Fox, the Omaha baseball team recorded a 4-1 victory over South Dakota State Friday afternoon at the Ballpark at Boys Town. With the win, the Mavericks improve to 18-19 (9-7 Summit League) on the year, while the Jackrabbits drop to 14-23 (9-7 Summit League).

Fox (7-2) earned his league-leading seventh win of the season, keeping SDSU to one run on eight hits with a season-high 10 strikeouts and no walks. It marked the second complete game of his career. The loss went to Andrew Clemen (3-6), who gave up four runs on three hits and four walks with four strikeouts over 8.0 innings pitched.

Freshman Grant Suponchick led the Mavericks offensively, finishing 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. The Papillion-LaVista South product belted his first career home run with a solo shot in the fourth inning.

Omaha got on the board first in the bottom of the second, loading the bases with two outs. After Suponchick singled through the right side, freshman Riley Herold and junior Sam Palensky both walked to juice the bags. Senior Collin Leif then worked a full-count walk to score Suponchick for UNO's first run of the day. Senior Alex Schultz followed by being plunked by a pitch, plating Herold and extending the lead to 2-0.

The Mavericks added another run in the fourth when Suponchick homered to left, making it 3-0. They tacked on their last run in the eighth, started with Schultz walking on four pitches, then advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Cole Gruber and third on a flyout by senior Clayton Taylor. Schultz then stole home, spotting Omaha a 4-0 advantage.

Fox, meanwhile, limited SDSU to a hit in both the first and third innings and two more hits in the eighth. The Jacks finally tallied their first run of the day in the ninth, with Paul Jacobson leading off the inning with a single through the right side and later scoring on Matt Johnson's two-out RBI single to the same spot. SDSU then loaded the bases with singles from Newt Johnson and Anthony Schneider, but a final flyout capped it at 4-1.
