Mavericks Nab Top 10 Finish in Season Opener

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Omaha cross country team opened the season under the lights at the Augustana Twilight Meet, finishing in eighth overall out of 30 teams with 234 points in the 5k event.
"This was a good opener to see where we are as a team," said assistant coach Cliff Cisar. "We now use this as our benchmark and will build and improve each week."
Leading the way for the Mavericks was Willa Koenig (So., Lincoln, Neb.) in 18:50.00, good for 30th. Fellow sophomore Renata Valquier Chavez (So., Elkhorn, Neb.) crossed the line in 19:02.87, taking 46th. Emily Johnson (Fr., Elkhorn, Neb.) took 60th while Karo Garcia (Sr., Columbus, Neb.) took 61st in 19:15.18 and 19:15.58, respectively. Johnson's time was a new personal best by 18 seconds. Rounding out the scoring five was Alyssa Averhoff (Sr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa) in 71st with a time of 19:23.70. Â
Creighton's Emily Martin took home the top spot in the meet with a winning time of 17:21.68, comfortably defeating Megan Billington of South Dakota who finished in 17:44.48. But it was Summit League preseason No. 1 South Dakota taking home the team trophy with just 24 points.
The Mavericks head down to Lincoln on September 16 to compete in the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational. Event preview and live results will be available on OMavs.com.
