Mavericks Push Past Inclement Weather at Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Omaha cross country team waited out a one-hour lightning delay before competing in the Woody Greeno/Dirksen Invitational at Pioneers Park on Saturday. The Mavericks took fifth place among Division I schools and a spot in the top ten overall.
Fresh off a 15-second 5k personal record at Augustana, Emily Johnson (Fr., Elkhorn, Neb.) lead the way, securing 26th overall in 22:47.5 in her first career 6k event. Renata Valquier Chavez (So., Elkhorn, Neb.) finished 29th while fellow sophomore Willa Koenig (So., Lincoln, Neb.) finished 31st at 23:05.2 and 23:08.9, respectively.
The fourth Maverick across the line was Alyssa Averhoff (Sr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa) with a time of 23:31.1, good for 39th. Rounding out the scoring five was Anita Jenkins (So., Omaha, Neb.) in 52nd with a time of 24:01.8. The spread between the scoring five was an impressive 1:14.
Assistant Coach Cliff Cisar praised his team for staying focused through the weather delay.
"Even when faced with the adversity of Mother Nature forcing an hour delay, we persevered through the tough conditions and ran very well," said Cisar.
"Emily ran a great tactical race which allowed her to use the last 2k of the race to her advantage by picking up spots one by one," added Cisar. "In the end, she put together a terrific and gutsy performance for a freshman."
The University of South Dakota took home the top spot with 22 points. Andrea Shine of Iowa was the top collegiate finisher in 21:31.9, good for second overall.
Omaha travels to Minneapolis, Minn. next weekend to compete in the fabled Roy Griak Invitational. The meet is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
