MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Omaha cross country team took on several of the nation's top teams at the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational hosted Minnesota on Saturday. Â
Hot weather at the Les Bolstad Course kept several runners from finishing including two of the Mavericks' usual top five, Karo Garcia and Willa Koenig. UNO placed 18th with 555 points.
"Heat was a major factor for everyone today," said assistant coach Cliff Cisar. "Those who ran well were able to separate the mind and the body and embrace the challenge. We gained a lot of valuable experience and we were able to see some conference competition today."
Once again, freshman Emily Johnson led the team, scoring 93rd with a time of 24:13 for the 6k event. She now has been the top scorer for Omaha in back-to-back meets. Senior Kayla Sabotin crossed the line at 109th in 25:03, and Renata Valquier Chavez was 116th at 25:34.
Lauren Houston ran 25:38 to score in 118th place, and Alyssa Averhoff finished the scoring at 119th with a time of 25:48.

San Francisco won the team title with just 25 points and nearly swept the first five individual spots. The individual winner was San Francisco's Weronika Pyzik in 21:09.
The Mavericks have a two-week break before returning to action at the Bradley Pink Classic in Peoria, Ill. on Friday, October 13. The race is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
