Omaha Finishes Weekend Play at Bluejay Invitational

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women's tennis team played its third tournament of the fall season this weekend at the Bluejay Invitational at Koch Family Tennis Center.
The Mavericks opened play on Friday, picking up five singles wins. Senior Michelle Lo defeated North Dakota's Preethi Kasilingam, 6-2, 7-6 (5) in Flight A, while junior Janelle Wilson topped Ginger Valentine of Gustavus Adolphus, 7-6 (2), 6-2 in Flight B. Freshman Savannah Crowell dispatched Hannah Borgh of Gustavus Adolphus, 6-1, 6-2 in Flight D, and two more victories came in Flight E -- sophomore Emily Behling over UND's Mary Wessman, 6-3, 6-2, and sophomore Clare Crockett over Creighton's Julia Aguirre, 7-6 (1), 7-2.
Friday's doubles action resulted in two wins apiece for two Maverick pairs. In Flight A, Crowell/Wilson defeated Colorado State's Emily Kolbow and Priscilla Palermo, 7-5, then CU's Ashley Ishimura and Erin Epperson, 6-1. Flight C saw Crockett and sophomore Rylee Tucker triumph over Doane's Ashley Zaeske and Carissa Moore, 7-6 (3), and Sheila Sullivan and Laura Martin of Gustavus Adolphus, 6-1. Behling and junior Michelle Walker tallied another win in Flight B, 6-4 over UND's Masha Lobanova and Alex Revenig.
On Saturday, the Mavericks chalked up five more singles wins. Two came in Flight B, with Wilson outlasting UND's Elly Hartnett, 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 for third place, and Lorentz defeating Zaeske, 6-1, 6-3. Flight D included victories for Tucker in straight sets over Doane's Briana Kempel, 6-0, 6-0, and Crowell over Revenig, 7-5, 6-3 for third place. Behling knocked out a three-set win over CU's Kendra Lavallee in Flight E, dropping the first set 4-6 before rallying 7-5, 6-1 in the next two.
Doubles capped the day, and Tucker/Crockett then finished off UND's Wessman and Courtney Brackin, 6-4 to win Flight C. Behling/Walker then won over Valentine and Borgh, 6-1 for fifth place in the in Flight B consolation final, and Lo/Lorentz defeated Kasilingam/Sullivan 6-3 for seventh place in Flight A.
"This was a great tournament this weekend," head coach Adam Summitt said. "We couldn't have asked for better weather, and being at home helped energize the team. We've had a lot of really good performances over the last two days to consider. There are still some things to work on, but I believe our team will use this to keep improving."
Omaha closes the fall portion of its schedule Oct. 19-22 at the ITA Regional Championships in Lawrence, Kan.
