Scouting the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks
Northern Arizona is 1-1 (0-0 Big Sky) after a season-opening 97-82 win over Jacksonville last Saturday and a 90-74 loss at South Dakota Monday. Carlos Hines scored a career-high 23 points at USD, while Ted McCree (16) and Bernie Andrew (11) also finished in double figures.
The Lumberjacks, who finished 5-27 (2-16 Big Sky) a year ago, were picked 11th in the Big Sky's preseason polls in a vote of the league's coaches and media.
Head coach Jack Murphy is in his seventh season at NAU, carrying a career record of 69-129.
All-Time Against Northern Arizona
Northern Arizona holds a 1-0 advantage in the all-time series with Omaha. The two teams last met in 1972-73, with the Lumberjacks picking up a 102-84 win.
Last Time Out: Mavericks Top Buena Vista for First Win, 94-58
Five Mavericks scored in double figures as Omaha earned its first win of the season last Friday, defeating Buena Vista 94-58 at Baxter Arena. Zach Jackson led all scorers with 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting with three 3-pointers, in addition to four rebounds, four assists and three steals. It marked Jackson's second straight 20-point scoring performance of the week.
KJ Robinson added 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting, and Matt Pile had 13 points and seven rebounds. Wanjang Tut chipped in 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds, and Mitch Hann rounded it out with 11 points, five boards and two steals. JT Gibson had a career-high six steals alongside five points and three rebounds.
Omaha shot .557 (39-of-70) to Buena Vista's .418 (23-of-55) and had a 38-24 advantage on the glass. The Mavericks outscored BVU 54-12 in the paint, including 36-6 in the second half.
Action Jackson
Senior guard Zach Jackson ranked in the top five in the Summit League last season for scoring, field goal percentage, field goals made and free throws made, averaging 17.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. The Wichita, Kan, native opened the 2018-19 campaign with back-to-back 20-point scoring performances with 21 points at Minnesota and 23 vs. Buena Vista.
Against 16 high major opponents in the last four seasons, Jackson has averaged 11.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 0.7 assists and 1.1 steals per game. Over the last three years, his high-major numbers have been 15.4 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 1.1 apg and 1.4 spg in 11 games.
The Evolution of Zach Jackson
Senior guard Zach Jackson has been a four-year starter, averaging 10.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per game for his career. The Wichita, Kan., native scored in double figures in all but three games in 2017-18, including 12 performances with 20+ points and four double-doubles. From his freshman campaign to his junior year, Jackson evolved into an all-league player and last year became the sixth Maverick in the Division I era to score 500+ points in a single season.
Feelin' Hahn, Hahn, Hahn
Senior forward Mitch Hahn scored in double figures in back-to-back games to open the season, totaling 14 points at Minnesota (Nov. 6) and another 11 vs. Buena Vista (Nov. 9).
Hahn returned to the Maverick lineup last January after more than seven weeks out due to injury. From Jan. 25 to March 3, the Fremont, Neb., native averaged 11.4 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game, and his effort against Oral Roberts (Feb. 22) included a season-high 23 points with 9-of-14 shooting and five 3-pointers.
Milestones in the Making for Jackson
Senior guard Zach Jackson entered his final season on the brink of with two major milestones. Nov. 9 at Minnesota, he became the 39th 1,000-point scorer in program history and now ranks 34th all-time for scoring with 1,036 points.
Jackson also has 405 rebounds over his career, needing 95 to become the 12th player in school history with at least 1,000 points and 500 boards.
Welcome, Wanjang
Redshirt freshman forward Wanjang Tut has enjoyed a solid debut for the Mavericks, averaging 12.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in reserve over the first two contests. The Omaha native opened the year with 13 points, three rebounds and two assists at Minnesota last Tuesday, and he was the first off the bench Friday vs. Buena Vista for 12 points and eight boards.
