Mavericks Open 1-1 at Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Invitational

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Omaha (6-6) opened day one of the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Invitational with a 2-0 shutout victory over the host Islanders (4-7), followed by a 5-3 loss to Utah State (4-6).
In the opener, Sydney Hampton threw a complete game shutout and went 1-for-2 at the plate as the Mavericks defeated Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.
In game two, Hampton hit a two-run double to give UNO an early lead, but Utah State used a five-run fifth inning to pick up the victory.
The Mavericks continue tournament play on Saturday, Feb. 24 against Texas Southern at 10:45 a.m. and Texas A&M – Corpus Christi at 1 p.m. No live stats or video will be available.
Omaha 3, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi 0
Omaha freshman pitcher Sydney Hampton (5-1) allowed five hits in a complete-game effort, as the Mavericks opened up tournament play with a 2-0 win over Texas A&M – Corpus Christi on Friday at Chapman Field.
UNO struck first in the top of the fifth inning as Lexi Burchfield scored off a Natalie Mostek single. Following a pitching change, Lexi Burchfield scampered home on a wild pitch to put Omaha in front 2-0.
Hampton then retired nine of the final 10 batters to earn the complete-game victory.
Five different Mavericks had hits in the game, led by Mostek's 1-for-4 effort with an RBI. Demi Dobbs went 1-for-3 with a double. Hampton, Emma Dargy and Faith Romero each had hits.
Utah State 5, Omaha 3
Mostek led the Mavericks at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Hampton added a 1-for-3 effort with a double and two RBI. Dargy and Romero also had hits for UNO.
Laura Roecker (0-3) pitched 4.2 innings allowing five runs on 11 hits and three walks with a strikeout. Hampton pitched the final 1.1 innings allowing no hits with a strikeout.
The Mavericks jumped on Aggie starter Delane Hull (2-1) in the second inning. Demi Dobbs reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on Dargy's single to right field. Both runners came home on Hampton's double to right field. Mostek hit a two-out single to left that scored Hampton for a 3-0 lead.
Utah State broke through with five runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth for a 5-3 lead.
The Mavericks put runners in scoring position in the top of the seventh, but Aggie relief pitcher Kelli White was able to work out of the jam.
