OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha baseball team took on Creighton in a crosstown clash Tuesday night, falling 9-2 at TD Ameritrade Park. The Mavericks are now 12-19 on the season, while the Bluejays improve to 21-10.
Ian Evans (2-0) earned the win in relief for Creighton, throwing 4.0 innings of one-hit, one-run ball. Spencer Koelewyn (2-3) took the loss, surrendering one unearned run on one hit in an inning of work.
Tyler Daugherty was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored for the Mavericks.
CU had 12 hits as a team, powered by Jack Strunc's 3-for-5 effort with a run and two RBI. Will Robertson was 2-for-5 and drove in three runs.
The Bluejays led the entire way, opening to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a Strunc RBI single to score Isaac Collins. Though Omaha loaded the bases in the top of the second, CU got out of the jam to hold on to the one-run edge. They pushed it to 4-0 with a three-run, four-hit frame in the third, then 6-0 with a pair of runs on four singles in the fifth.
Omaha crossed its first run in the sixth, breaking up Creighton's no-hit bid when Daugherty led off with a single to short. After advancing to third, he came in on Grant Suponchick's RBI single to center to cut the score to 6-1.
But Creighton got it back in the home half of the inning on Michael Emodi's RBI double and a two-run homer from Robertson, extending the margin to 9-1.
Down to the final three outs in the ninth, Josh Scribner came up with a pinch-hit single down the right field line for his first hit of the season. Henry Wittren also came in to pinch hit, fighting through a nine-pitch at-bat to triple down the left field line for his first hit of the year, which plated Scribner to bring the final tally to 9-2.
Omaha continues non-conference play on Wednesday, April 18, visiting in-state foe Nebraska. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park in Lincoln, and the game will be broadcast live on BTN Plus. Links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com.
