Ahrens Makes It Three Straight Summit Outdoor Titles
May 11, 2018 | Track & Field
TULSA, Okla. – Senior Stephanie Ahrens won her third straight Summit League outdoor high jump title on the second day of competition at the league championship on Friday.
Ahrens jumped 5-09 ¾ to beat runner up Daejha Moss of North Dakota State by two inches. Ahrens is the first Summit League athlete to win the high jump outdoors in three straight years and only the second to win the outdoor event three times in a career.
Ahrens now owns four Summit high jump titles, including one during the 2018 indoor season. She also tied teammate Taryn Derickson for the indoor title in 2016 but was awarded second on tiebreakers.
By winning the event, Ahrens earned All-Summit League honors.
"I'm extremely proud of Steph," said head coach Chris Richardson. "Not many people can say they were a conference champion, and she has done it four times now. She and Coach (Jill) Sutton have been working great together."
In action on the track, junior Lauren Houston qualified for the finals of the 800 meters with a time of 2:14.80, the second-fastest qualifying time.
Both Ahrens and sophomore Sasha Quattlebaum ran identical times of 14.52 in the 100 meter hurdles. Ahrens tied her best time of the season while Quattlebaum had a season best, although both times were wind aided and neither athlete qualified for Saturday's finals.
Wind also played a factor in the 200 meters as Brekk Flax ran her fastest wind-aided time of 26.00, but she missed qualifying for the finals.
"We had some things go our way today, but other things did not," added Richardson. "There's a lot the meet left, and we need everyone to stay focused, be confident and come out expecting to do their best on Saturday."
The Mavericks are sixth in the team standings after two days of competition with 10 points. The final day of the championship begins Saturday at 11 a.m. at Oral Roberts' OneOK Sports Complex.
