Mavericks Begin New Season at Augustana

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha cross country team opens its 2018 season at the Augustana Twilight on Friday, Aug. 31 at 8:30 p.m.
The meet will be run under the lights at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls, S.D.
The Mavericks, picked fifth in the annual Summit League preseason coaches' poll, are coming off their most successful Division I season in 2017. They took fourth at the Summit League Championships, their highest finish since joining the league.
In the NCAA Midwest Regional, four Mavericks then ran 6K times that all ranked in the top 10 in school history, helping the team to its highest regional finish.
This season, the Mavericks boast a roster of 10 runners, although juniors Renata Valquier Chavez and Willa Koenig will redshirt due to injury. Sophomore Emily Johnson will be looking to build on a strong rookie season in 2017 when she led the Mavericks in scoring twice and never finished outside of third on the team. Her season-best 6K time of 22:14.0 at the Midwest Regionals was the seventh fastest in school history for that distance.
Junior Anita Jenkins and seniors Annie Catania, Lauren Houston and Daylee Olson all provide depth for the Mavericks.
UNO also added two runners in junior college transfer Ivanna Uribe and true freshman Heidi Hall. Uribe is a Burke High School graduate who attended Highland Community College and was an NJCAA All-American in cross country as a sophomore. Hall ran for AHSTW High School in Avoca, Iowa, finishing in the top 15 in the state championship meet as a senior.
The Mavericks also will compete in meets at Nebraska, Notre Dame and Bradley. They then will host the Summit League Championships at Miracle Hill Golf Course in Omaha on Saturday, Oct. 27.
