OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha hockey team piled up five power play goals, tying a school record, in a 6-1 win over Alabama Huntsville in the season opening game at Baxter Arena on Friday night.

Six different players scored goals with Tristan Keck leading the point parade with a goal and two assists.

The Mavericks led 2-0 late in the second period, outshooting the Chargers by a wide margin. It looked as if they wouldn't be rewarded for their efforts, but UAH's Jack Jeffers got a five-minute boarding major and the Mavericks went to work.

Zach Jordan roofed a shot from in tight at 19:21, and Chayse Primeau converted off a net-mouth scramble 31 seconds later, putting UNO up 4-0 after two.

Still with power play time to start the third, the Mavericks got two more. Keck made it 5-0 just 1:44 into the period, tipping in a blast from Ryan Jones, and Jason Smallidge scored on a long shot from the blue line to make it 6-0.

The Chargers got their own five-minute power play later in the period and spoiled Isaiah Saville's shutout bid with a goal from Tanner Hickey at 12:50.

Saville was sharpest down the stretch as the Chargers peppered him with 10 shots in the final period. He finished with 14 saves and a win in his collegiate debut.

The Mavericks got out in front quickly in the first period. Josh Boyer fired home a pass from Keck for his first collegiate goal at 4:32.

Omaha added to the lead 1:59 later. Teemu Pulkkinen jammed in a pass from Taylor Ward on a power play at 6:31 to put UNO up 2-0 after one.

The two teams wrap up the series on Saturday at 7:07 p.m.

GAME NOTES:

In addition to Boyer's first collegiate goal, Ryan Brushett and Brandon Scanlin each had an assist for their first career points.
Thirteen players registered a point for the Mavericks.
Saville became the first Maverick goaltender to win his first start since Alex Blankenburg beat North Dakota on Jan. 15, 2016.
The Mavericks tied the school record for power play goals in a game. They also scored five against Minnesota State in 2007 and at North Dakota in 2011.
Omaha improved to 12-2-3 all-time against Alabama Huntsville including a mark of 10-1-2 at home.
