Freshman Austin Roden became just the second Maverick goalie to post a shutout in his collegiate debut as the Mavericks blanked Alabama Huntsville, 5-0.

OMAHA, Neb. – Senior Zach Jordan scored two goals, and freshman Austin Roden posted a shutout in his first collegiate start as the Omaha hockey team blanked Alabama Huntsville, 5-0, to complete the series sweep.

Jordan also had an assist to lead all scorers with three points. Ryan Jones added a goal and an assist, and Kevin Conley had two assists as the veterans led the Mavericks' attack.

Omaha starts the season 2-0-0 while the Chargers fell to 0-4-0.

As they did on opening night, Omaha struck first. Jordan worked the puck in front to Joey Abate who fluttered a shot over UAH goalie David Fessenden for his first career goal at 7:13 of the first period.

The Mavericks added to the lead on a power play at 12:07 of the second period. Jones' blast from the slot ricocheted in off a Charger defender to make it 2-0.

A little more than four minutes later, Jordan made a strong move to the net, pulling the puck to his forehand and ramming it past Fessenden at 16:21.

In the third, Chayse Primeau fired home a pass from Josh Boyer at 6:15 for his second goal of the season. Jordan then finished off the scoring by driving in a nifty pass from Ryan Brushett at 16:55.

Roden made 18 saves to earn his first win. He becomes the second Maverick to earn a shutout in his first career start, joining Evan Weninger who made 40 saves at Minnesota State on Oct. 11, 2015. He did so in front of his parents and sister who made the long trip to Omaha from Victoria, British Columbia.

Fessenden made 18 saves for UAH in his second career start.

The Mavericks are on the road for their next two series beginning next week when they visit Ohio State on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 18-19.

GAME NOTES:

Jordan leads the Mavericks with three goals and is tied with Tristan Keck for the team scoring lead with four points in the series.
Jones' goal was his first since December 2017, his sophomore year.
Abate was the only UNO rookie to register his first career goal or point in the game. Brushett and Brandon Scanlin each picked up another assist, and Boyer got his first assist following a goal in Friday night's win.
The Mavericks went 1-for-4 on the power play and registered six power play goals in the series.
