Mavericks Open Indoor Season This Week
Dec 4, 2019 | Track & Field
OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha track & field team begins its indoor season this weekend, competing in the Mel Tjeersdma Classic at Northwest Missouri State on Saturday, Dec. 7.
The action kicks off at 9 a.m. from Hughes Fieldhouse in Maryville, Mo.
This season, many of the Mavericks' younger athletes will play prominent roles as 18 of the 25 team members are either freshmen or sophomores.
In the distance events, sophomore Heidi Hall will look to build off a strong cross country campaign during which she led the Mavericks in one race and finished second in five others. She'll be UNO's top returning runner in the 3,000 meters and one of its top two in the 5,000 meters following the decision by junior Emily Johnson to leave the team. Hall was named to the Summit League's preseason Athletes To Watch list.
Senior Anita Jenkins will be another distance standout for the Mavericks in both the 3K and 5K races. She also posted UNO's best mile time last season and posted the second-best 800 meter time behind graduated senior Lauren Houston.
In the sprints, senior Brekk Flax returns as the Mavericks' top threat in the 60 meters and will team with junior Scarlett Hill as UNO's top pair in the 200 meters.
Sophomore Lauren Riley had UNO's top marks in the long jump and triple jump last season.
In the throws, junior Jaycee Schettler was UNO's top performer in the shot put while sophomore Lori Vedder is the Mavericks' best returning athlete in the weight throw.
Omaha tied with Purdue Fort Wayne for seventh in the annual Summit pre-season coaches' poll.
This will be the Mavericks' only meet prior to winter break. They'll resume competition on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 17-18, at the Graduate Classic at Nebraska.
