Mavericks Play Host To North Dakota State This Weekend

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha baseball program opens The Summit League series with a three-game home stand against the North Dakota State Bison this weekend, March 16-17.

The Mavericks and Bison square off at Millard North High School due to weather conditions at Seymour Smith Park. The new schedule is a 6 p.m. game on Saturday, followed by a doubleheader at noon Sunday.

LEADING OFF
• Omaha is riding a four-game winning streak after sweeping Santa Clara on the road last weekend.
• The Bison, however, have not been able to play a game since March 1 due to weather.
• Omaha's pitching has become the story of late, as two of the team's starters have already garnered Summit League Pitcher of the Week honors this season.
• Joey Machado is coming off Co-Pitcher of the Week honors after he tossed a career-high 13 strikeouts and is on a streak of 13 shutout innings.
• Payton Kinney is 3-0 this season and earned Pitcher of the Week back on Feb. 25. Kinney also posts a league-best 0.78 ERA, which ranks 29th in the nation. His three wins are also a league best.
• In the bullpen, Tyler Daugherty and Cal Hehnke rank first and second amongst league competition with four and three saves this season.
• Last season, the Bison took both of the series over the Mavericks.
• The last win for Omaha over North Dakota State was a 13-2 win in Fargo on April 28, 2018.
• Thomas DeBonville's three triples rank sixth in the nation.

North Dakota State gets to play its first game in nearly two weeks after weather cancelled a pair of series and a mid-week tilt. The Bison are trying to get out of a slow start, as the team is 2-8 thus far. North Dakota State defeated Sacramento State in its season opener on Feb. 16, but then dropped eight consecutive.

The losing skid finally snapped in the team's most recent game, as the Bison defeated Northern Colorado 11-5 on March 1. Jack Simosen leads The Summit League with a .400 batting average through 10 games.

Fellow teammate Brock Anderson follows with a .357 batting average that ranks third in the league. Peter Brookshaw rounds out the top-3 with a .300 batting average that ranks ninth amongst league competition. Saturday starter Max Loven has a team-best 1.06 ERA in three mound appearances. He has an 0-1 record with 17.0 innings pitched, 16 strikeouts, nine hits, four runs allowed, two errors and two walks. Friday starter Zach Smith has a 3.63 ERA with an 0-1 record. He has a team-high 17.1 innings pitched with 15 strikeouts on 17 hits and five walks allowed.

Head coach Tod Brown is in his 12th campaign with the Bison. The veteran coach has compiled a 272-298 record, all at NDSU.
