Omaha Locks Up With Creighton, SDSU In Opening Week of April

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha baseball program plays host to Creighton for a mid-week matchup Wednesday, April 3, at Werner Park for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch. The Mavericks then hit the road to take on South Dakota State in a three-game Summit League series.
The Mavericks square off against Creighton for the first time this season and plays in just its second mid-week game in 2019.
First-place Omaha then battles second-place South Dakota State in Sioux Falls, S.D. at Augustana University due to field conditions in Brookings. The Mavericks are slated for a 2 p.m. game Friday, April 5, followed by a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
LEADING OFF
• The Mavericks head into the game tied for the nations' best fielding percentage at .984 with No. 3 NC State.
• Omaha's Breyden Eckhout is the current Summit League Player of the Week with after he batted .750 in the series sweep over Western Illinois and was .625 for the week.
• He currently ranks second among league players with a .462 batting average in league play.
• Payton Kinney ranks fifth in the nation with a Summit League-best 0.59 ERA through seven mound appearances.
• He is a two-time Summit League Pitcher of the Week and is at a league-best 5-0 this season.
• Other starters Joey Machado and Spencer Koelewyn are 4-1 and 3-1 this season, respectively.
• Machado has been named Summit League Pitcher of the Week this season with a 3.63 ERA, while Koelewyn is at a 2.81 ERA.
• Koelewyn has been the Sunday starter for this 2019 season and he leads the nation with the fewest hits allowed per nine innings at 3.38.
• Wednesday will be just the second mid-week game for Omaha this season, as the Mavericks fell 12-2 at Wichita State last Tuesday.
• Jackson Gordon earns his first start of the season for the Mavericks.
• The freshman from Omaha Skutt Catholic High School, however, has two saves this season in 13.1 innings pitched.

• Omaha and Creighton meet for the first time this season at Werner Park, home of the Omaha Storm Chasers, the Class AAA affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.
• Creighton is 14-6 overall and will open BIG EAST competition Friday, April 12, against Butler for a three-game series.
• Jake Holton is the current BIG EAST Player of the Week after he batted .412 with 10 RBI on three homers, two doubles and 18 total bases against Illinois State.
• South Dakota State sits at 14-10 overall and 7-2 in league play.
• The Jackrabbits are currently in second place in the league standings behind Omaha, and Sunday hurler Nic McCay is the current Pitcher of the Week and ranks third in league play with a 3.32 ERA.
