Mavericks Gear Up For Summit Championships

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha track & field team will compete in the Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Wednesday-Friday, May 8-10.
Competition begins at 10 a.m. on Wednesday and at 11 a.m. on both Thursday and Friday from Hanson Field on the campus of Western Illinois.
The Mavericks finished sixth in the 2018 Summit Outdoor Championships and were picked sixth in this year's preseason coaches' poll.
Omaha will be led by senior Lauren Houston. She currently ranks second in the Summit in the 800 meters with a time of 2:09.44, a lifetime best run at the Bryan Clay Invitational on April 17. Â
Last year, Houston earned All-Summit honors by finishing second in the 800 meters outdoors.
Sophomore Emily Johnson also will be a threat to score for the Mavericks in the 5,000 meters. The native of Elkhorn set the school record in the event at the Clay Invitational with a time of 16:57.09, the fifth fastest in the Summit this season. Â
Johnson also is scheduled to run the 10,000 meters.
In the field events, senior Anna Edet is the Mavericks' top-ranked athlete in the throws. She just missed tying her school record in the hammer throw last weekend at Nebraska and will enter competition this week ranked 12th in the event with a mark of 176-06.
Sophomore Cassady Sunderman and freshman Sidney Radziunas enter the championships tied for seventh in the league in the high jump with matching marks of 5-03 ¼, both set at the Mizzou Spring Open in early April.
There will be a new Summit high jump champion this year following three straight outdoor wins by Maverick Stephanie Ahrens. Ahrens is not compete this year after exhausting her outdoor eligibility last season.
