MACOMB, Ill. – Sophomore Emily Johnson set a school record in the 10,000 meters on the second day of competition for the Mavericks at the Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday.
Johnson, running the event for the first time this season, clocked a time of 36:02.12. She bested the previous record, which had stood since 2014, by more than 13 seconds.
"I can't say enough about how Emily competed today," said assistant coach Cliff Cisar who coaches the distance runners. "We had a game plan going in to today's race and just as things go sometimes, we had to make a switch on the fly within the first 1600 meters.
"She stayed extremely patient throughout the course of the race and did all she could with about three laps to go to try to hang on to the leader," Cisar added. "All in all, quite the debut for an event we hadn't thought about racing this season until about three weeks ago."
With her runner-up finish, Johnson earned the Mavericks' first eight points of the championships and picked up All-Summit League honors.
Later in the day, Lauren Houston qualified for Friday's finals in the 800 meters, running a time of 2:12.23 that ranked third among the qualifiers.
Sophia Kirwan qualified for the finals in the 400 meters, running a time of 59.17 that was just .18 seconds off her lifetime best.
Also on Thursday, Jaycee Schettler completed the final three events of the heptathlon, taking 10th place with a lifetime best score of 3,874 points. She was helped by a lifetime best long jump mark of 14-06 and a lifetime best time of 2:40.20 in the 800 meters.
Defending champion North Dakota State leads the women's championships with a score of 144 points. South Dakota is second at 94.5, and North Dakota is third at 45.5. The Mavericks are in sixth place.
The final day of the championships begins at 11 a.m. from Hanson Field at Western Illinois.
