OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha cross country team begins the 2019 season at the Augustana Twilight on Friday, Sept. 6 at Yankton Trails Park in Sioux Falls, S.D.
The Mavericks will take part in the 5K event beginning at 8:30 p.m.
Omaha was picked fifth in the annual preseason Summit League Coaches' Poll following a sixth-place finish in the 2018 Summit Championship.
The Mavericks will be led by junior Emily Johnson who was the team's top finisher in all six meets last season and earned All-Summit honors for finishing in the top 10 at the championship. Johnson is coming off an outstanding outdoor track season during which she set the school records in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters.
Johnson is one of five returners from last season. Seniors Anita Jenkins and Ivanna Uribe, redshirt junior Renata Valquier Chavez and sophomore Heidi Hall round out the returners. Sophomore Emily Robles will run this fall after competing solely in track & field last season.
The Mavericks also add five true freshmen including Raegan Andersen, Paige Blackford, Danielle Howard, Maya Nachtigal and Cassie Stolt. Junior Joanna Topham also joins the team after transferring from Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, Iowa.
Following action on Friday, the Mavericks will be off until they compete in the Greeno/Dirksen Invite at Nebraska on Sept. 21.
