Omaha to Host Summit League Women's Soccer Championship

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Omaha Athletics will host the Summit League women's soccer championship at Caniglia Field next April, the league announced today.

The Mavericks will welcome qualifying teams to Omaha on April 15-17 at Caniglia Field.

"Our staff is looking forward to hosting a memorable championship for all of the participating student-athletes and coaches," said Trev Alberts, Vice Chancellor for Athletics. "Caniglia Field is the finest soccer pitch in the Summit League, and it is a fitting venue for the league's crowning event in women's soccer."

The Summit League regular season for soccer will begin in February. The league pushed the 2020 regular season for all fall sports to the spring of 2021 to allow student-athletes to compete in a meaningful league schedule while focusing on the health and safety of all involved.

The nine Summit League teams will play a 16-match regular season beginning on Feb. 12 with the top four teams advancing to the championship.

Denver, the 2019 regular season champion, will retain the right to host the 2021 Championship.

"We are delighted the Summit League has chosen Omaha as the site for this year's league tournament," said head coach Tim Walters. "In what has been a challenging and unique offseason, we are so pleased our administration and medical staff have stepped up to put on a safe event for our Summit League Women's Soccer Championship at one of the top facilities in college soccer, Caniglia Field."

This is the second Summit League Championship scheduled to take place in Omaha in 2021. The Mavericks will host the league's baseball championship in May at Tal Anderson Field, part of their new baseball/softball complex. The Mavericks earned the right to do so after winning the league title in 2019. The 2020 championship was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, pushing the Mavericks' hosting duties to 2021.
