OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha women's tennis head coach Adam Summitt today announced an incoming class of three student-athletes including two who have signed National Letters of Intent and another transfer student.
True freshman Keegan VanPelt and Rachel Osborn have signed NLIs while Stefanie Mehlich will transfer to UNO from Alabama-Huntsville.
VanPelt is currently in her senior year at Free State High School in Lawrence, Kan. where she has been a four-year letter winner and a three-year captain. As a senior, she posted a 21-4 record individual record. She was an All-Sunflower League First Team selection for the fourth consecutive year as well as a state qualifier and academic all-state.
"I have known Keegan and her family for a long time, going back to my time coaching in Kansas," said Summitt. "She is a well-rounded individual who will fit into our team and culture seamlessly. She is a great tennis player whose best tennis is in front of her during these next four years.
"I know she's going to make an impact on the court and excel in the classroom," Summitt added. "I am thrilled to get a chance to work with Keegan and watch her develop on and off the court."
Osborn was born in Omaha but now calls Las Vegas, Nev. home. She is currently in her senior year at Odyssey Charter High School.
"Rachel is an outstanding person and terrific tennis player," said Summitt. "A big thing that drew me to her is her drive. She is top of her class in academics, and usually when that is the case I know the student is disciplined and self-motivated. That usually translates well into tennis.
"She is a great athlete that can play an aggressive game, she loves doubles and in college, that is a big part of our sport. She is going to fit in smoothly with our team and culture and will be able to contribute from day one."
Mehlich is a native of Oberhausen, Germany and played two seasons at Alabama-Huntsville. As a sophomore in 2018-19, she posted a 12-5 singles record at the No. 1 position for the Chargers and went 10-8 in doubles. She was a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree that season.
"Stefanie will be starting her graduate degree here in Omaha, and she brings plenty of experience," said Summitt. "She played the top positon for her team the past couple years, all while competing with some of the best players at the Division II level. She possess a strong game that will translate well to indoors and the courts at Miracle Hill. I can't wait to see her on campus next fall and to work with her."
