Baseball Drops 7-2 Result To Northwestern, Closes Out Series

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Mavericks baseball program dropped a 7-2 result in the series finale against Northwestern Sunday afternoon at Camelback Ranch.

The Wildcats plated six runs in the fourth to build a lead and hand Omaha its first loss of the season.

NOTES
•   Omaha wins the overall series for the second-straight time against Northwestern.
•   The Mavericks also won the three-game series in 2017 against the Wildcats, 2-1.
•   2018's season-opening series also resulted with a Maverick victory in games one and two, and a Wildcat win in game three.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Keil Krumwiede went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run. The Mavericks also registered hits from Parker Smejkal, Grant Goldston, Chris Esposito and Garrett Kennedy. On the mound, Richie Holetz fell to 0-1 on the season with 3.2 innings pitched and four strikeouts, with three walks, five hits and seven runs (four earned) allowed. In relief, Omaha also saw mound appearances from Cam Fowler, Josiah Scott, Jake Pennington and Zach Philbin.

INSIDE THE INNINGS
Northwestern got on the board with an RBI on a groundout in the bottom of the third. An inning later, Omaha fell behind 7-0 on six Wildcat runs. NU plated its second run on a single, followed by two more on a fielder's choice and an Omaha throwing error. The final three runs for the Wildcats came on a double to right field for a trio of RBI.

Omaha scored its first run of the game in the top of the fifth on an Esposito sacrifice fly that brought Krumwiede home. In the top of the seventh, Smejkal tripled and later scored on a Brett Bonar sacrifice fly.
