Mavericks Make Strides During Fall Season

Development was the overall goal for the Omaha women's tennis team in the fall. And head coach Adam Summitt is confident that his players made positive strides during their time on the court.
The Mavericks opened and closed their fall campaign with events at Drake, won their lone fall dual at home against Midland and performed well at the nearby Creighton Invite. They also competed at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships in Iowa City during their short schedule.
"The fall season is more individual-based. There's no team scoring, no team format," Summitt said. "The goals were just to implement the things we were working on with the players and put that into match play. We were not focused on the result so much, but just more developmental phases for each player."
Omaha, obviously, wanted to win each match, he said. But the results were secondary to improvement.
"At the end of the day, it's about them getting better and getting ready for the spring season," he said.
Summitt felt the Mavericks accomplished that, highlighting the efforts of some of his players in the fall.
Sophomore Addison Miller showed the most improvement, he said. After playing in tournaments over the summer, she performed well against some high-level opponents. Summitt also watched redshirt freshman Alexia Di Giulio progress as a player as her confidence grew in her first collegiate experience.
Senior Ines Absisan rebounded after dropping a close match in Omaha's 6-1 dual victory over Midland in October to have a strong finish to the fall. She teamed up with Rachel Osborn to win matches against Northern Iowa and Iowa at the ITA Regionals, advancing to the round of 32 to highlight the weekend.
Summitt said the Mavericks have traditionally always done well at the Creighton Invite. This fall was no exception, he said, praising the play of Miller, junior Lillian Tiemeyer, Di Giulio and Brooke Covington.
Omaha welcomed sophomore Colby Kelley back from injury for the Drake Hidden Duals, which wrapped up the fall competition. Although she could only serve underhanded, she won her singles match in three sets while also teaming up with senior Justine Linscott for the doubles competition in Des Moines.
The final Drake event was a team format, which Summitt said gave his team a jump-start toward spring.
"I hope that the girls utilize the things that we worked on and continue working on them over break," he said. "We want to keep getting better over the winter break. If we continue to do those things, the results will come."
