The Basics
The Mavericks host Western Illinois to close the first week of league play Wednesday, Dec. 22. The teams tipoff at 7 p.m. in Baxter Arena. Omaha looks for their first win in conference play, while the Leathernecks picked up their first victory in Denver earlier this week.

• Omaha dropped a close battle with St. Thomas in the league opener Monday night. Once down 29 points, the Mavericks rallied to get within five of the Tommies in the second half. The comeback fell short, 80-73.
• Three players scored double-figures for Omaha. Marco Smith set a new career-high with 19 points to lead the team. Frankie Fidler added another 18 points, while Felix Lemetti scored 16.

Lemetti, Nick Ferrarini, Darrius Hughes, Devin Evans, and Marco Smith have led Omaha started vs. UNLV and Corpus Christi and earned a first half lead. A lineup of Lemetti, Frankie Fidler, Hughes, Evans, and Smith led the Mavericks to a 10-point first half lead vs. Drake, which was the first lead in the half since the home opener vs. Hastings.
• Omaha ranks fifth in the league with 2.9 blocks per game. Dylan Brougham leads the Mavericks with 0.8 blocks per game, which is tied eighth in the league. He notched a career-high four blocks at Montana.
• Head coach Derrin Hansen enters his 17th season at the helm. He has a 249-246 career record leading the Mavericks.
• The 2021-22 season is the 109th overall in program history and the 11th of the Mavericks' Division I era. All-time, the program is 1,203-1,333.
Scouting the Western Illinois Leathernecks
The Leathernecks are off to a hot start this season coming into the midweek meeting 10-2 overall and 1-0 in league play. They are currently on a six-game win streak after downing Denver, Eastern Illinois Central Michigan, UT Martin, Ball State and Miami-Ohio.
In their league opener, the Leathernecks outscored the Pioneers 13-9 in overtime to earn an 84-80 win. Trenton Massner led all-scorers with 31 points and finished just shy of a double-double with nine boards.
Massner averages 15.1 points per game and a team-leading 6.4 rebounds per game. Will Carius is WIU's leading scorer with 17.6 ppg. He's scored at least 10 points in all but one game this season.
Rob Jeter is in his second season leading WIU. With the Leathernecks, he has compiled a record of 17-17. This season marks the 13th of his career. He's 201-187 all-time.
