Mavericks Picked Sixth in Preseason League Poll

Omaha was projected sixth in the preseason Summit League poll released on Tuesday.
The Mavericks, who finished sixth a year ago, received 21 points in the voting among conference coaches. Reigning seven-time league champion Denver was the overwhelming league favorite.
North Dakota and South Dakota were second and third, respectively, in the voting as they were separated by only two points. Kansas City, which received a first-place vote, finished in fourth.
The Mavericks followed Oral Roberts in the voting, with Western Illinois and conference newcomer St. Thomas rounding out the poll for the league as it expands to eight teams with the addition of UST.
"The Summit League has gotten stronger every year I have been in the league," Omaha coach Adam Summitt said. "This poll shows the depth women's tennis has within the league.
"We are right there, playing competitive matches with every team. I know our players aren't satisfied with how the season went last year, and they have been working really hard to change that outcome. They want to come out and prove people wrong."
The Mavericks open their season on Jan. 21 with a home match against Minnesota State.
Omaha senior Madison Gallegos, who posted eight wins at No. 1 singles last season, was named to the Summit's preseason Athletes to Watch list.
"I'm happy for Madison to be named a player to watch," Summitt said. "I truly believe, when healthy, she is one of the best players in the conference. She has plenty of experience and a game style that causes headaches for opponents. Just a matter of her being at 100 percent."
