Omaha Drops Another Opener as Miami Rallies

OXFORD, Ohio – No. 18 Omaha saw another series opener slip away Friday at Cady Arena.
The Mavericks (17-12) led Miami three times only to have the RedHawks (5-20-2) rally for a 5-4 victory to snap their nine-game winless streak while handing Omaha a seventh straight defeat in an opener.
Hampus Rydqvist scored the decisive goal right as a Maverick penalty expired with 3:39 remaining.
Taylor Ward tallied three assists for Omaha, helping it claim 1-0, 3-1 and 4-3 advantages. The RedHawks responded on each occasion, though, to pick up their first win in nearly two months.
The Mavericks, playing their third consecutive series on the road, outshot Miami 37-35 – and hit numerous pipes – in a game that featured 20 combined penalties for 54 minutes and 12 power plays.
Brandon Scanlin opened the scoring for the Mavericks, firing in a pass from Ward on a power play 3:43 in. Dylan Moulton answered in 29 seconds for Miami by banging in a puck that caromed off the boards.
It was back and forth from there. Jimmy Glynn followed up a near-miss by Matt Miller to give Omaha a 2-1 lead in the second. Kevin Conley doubled the advantage with a power-play goal 7:36 into the period.
But Miami scored two power-play goals, 37 seconds apart, to pull even at 3-3 before the break. The first, by Ryan Savage, came during 5-on-3 play. Joe Cassetti recorded the other as the power play continued.
Omaha played the final period without Scanlin, who was given a game misconduct late in the second for hitting from behind. The Mavericks survived the five-minute major then moved ahead in the third 4-3.
Brannon McManus buried a Ward pass during a power play with 12:41 remaining to put Omaha on top for the final time. The lead lasted for five minutes, until Derek Daschke scored with a man advantage.
Each team had three power-play goals. Rydqvist's game-winner was moments away from a fourth for Miami.
