DENVER, Colo. -Â Omaha Hockey (2-4-0, 0-2-0 NCHC) came out strong against No. 3 Denver on Saturday night, striking first on the power play before falling 4-1 to the defending national champions at Magness Arena in Denver, Colo.
Sophomore assistant captain Luke Woodworth (Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, Canada) opened the scoring for Omaha at 7:50 of the first period on the power play, finding the back of the net off assists from assistant captain Maxime Pellerin (Victoriaville, Quebec, Canada) and Parker Berge (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada).
The Mavericks carried their lead into the first intermission behind a strong defensive effort, successfully killing off four Pioneer power-play opportunities. Freshman goaltender Will Lacelle (Gatineau, Quebec, Canada) made 10 saves in the opening frame to preserve Omaha's one-goal advantage.
No. 3 Denver evened the score at 2:00 of the second period when Kyle Chyzowski scored off assists from Ryan Miller and Cale Ashcroft.
The Pioneers took their first lead at 13:27 of the middle frame when Miller scored off assists from Max Heise and Ryan Lin, sending Denver into the second intermission with a 2-1 advantage.
Omaha continued to battle in the third period, creating opportunities on the offensive end while looking for the equalizer. Denver extended its lead at 13:34 when Daxon Rudolph scored on the power play to make it 3-1.
The Mavericks continued pressing offensively, pulling Lacelle for an extra attacker late in regulation. Denver added an empty-net goal from Kristian Epperson with eight seconds remaining to secure the 4-1 final.
Lacelle continued his strong start between the pipes, turning aside 25 shots to keep the Mavericks within striking distance throughout much of the contest.
Omaha finished with 25 shots on goal, including nine in each of the final two periods. Marcus Nguyen (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) led the Mavericks with five shots on goal, while Pellerin, Berge and Vincent Desjardins each added three.
The Mavericks also held a 34-32 advantage in faceoffs, with Trevor Wong (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) winning a team-high 11 draws.
Omaha returns to Baxter Arena for a two-game home series against St. Cloud State on Nov. 6-7 on Kemp Ice. Both games will begin at 7 p.m. CT, streaming on NCHCtv.
