Mavericks Set for Summit League Championships

FARGO, N.D. – The Omaha swimming & diving teams head to Fargo this week to compete in the 2021-22 Summit League Championships Feb. 16-19. The event is hosted at the Hullbret Aquatic Center for the second year in a row.

Championship Notes
• The Denver women's squad enter this year's championship having each won the last eight team titles. A year ago, the Pioneer women won 18 of the 19 swimming races and received all individual honors postseason and end of the season honors. The reigning Swimmer of the Year Aysia Leckie will make her return to the Hulbert Aquatic Center leads the league in the 50 free (22.75), 100 free (50.10) and 200 free (1:48.20), while last season's Diver of the Year, Olivia Gordon, will look to repeat her performance at last year's championship.
• On the men's side, the Pioneers' Ammar Hassan broke into the top ten marks in the league's record books in the 1-meter (396.60, 3rd best) and 3-meter (362.48, 5th best), with both scores being NCAA Zone Qualifying Standards. Furthermore, DU brings back multiple All-Summit League performers from last season including two-time individual winner and the Newcomer of the Championship Mads Rishøj, as well as Darragh Mahns and Kelby Modene.
• The South Dakota men's program will look to repeat as champions after capturing their first #SummitSD team title last season. The Coyotes' Zachary Kopp, the reigning Swimming Championship MVP and Swimmer of the Year, will return along with Charlie Bean, who was an All-Summit League performer having placed in the top-three in six events (two individual events) during last season's championship. Along with Kopp and Bean, USD returns 10 All-League performers.
• On the women's side, the Coyotes bring back 11 All-Summit League recipients and have two swimmers that earned Swimmer of the Week honors in Mairead Powers and Emily Kahn. USD has 19 swimmers that rank among the league's top ten in their respective events. Among those is Cassie Ketterling, who holds the fourth-best time in the 200 breast (2:19.64), sixth-best time in the 100 breast (1:04.57) and eighth-best time in the 100 fly (56.04). Kahn also ranks in the top ten in three events, including fourth in the 50 free (23.27, relay leadoff), 100 free (50.50) and 200 free (1:50.72) along with 10th in the 500 free (5:05.09).
• South Dakota State's Elisabeth Timmer is the top returning Jackrabbit as the junior swimmer was named an All-Summit League honoree in two individual events and four relay events during last season's championship. Timmer has been named the Women's Swimmer of the Week four times this season and currently ranks first among Summit League women swimmers in the 100 IM (56.43), second in the 200 IM (2:04.44), third in both the 50 free (23.08) and 100 free (50.45), fourth in the 100 back (56.41), fifth in both the 200 free (1:50.73) and 100 fly (55.68) and ninth in the 200 fly (2:09.33).
• SDSU men's diver Zach Boyd, will look to repeat as the Men's Championship MVP after claiming both the 1-meter and 3-meter titles during last season's championships. Boyd has earned two Diver of the Week awards this season, having earned six during his career.
• Omaha men's swimming will make its Summit League championship debut, with freshman Daniel Young leading the way for the Mavericks, having earned himself three Swimmer of the Week accolades. Meanwhile, the women are led by the trio of Hailey Matthews, Caroline Gardner and Parker Hagemann on the swimming side, who have all earned weekly awards. Divers Darby Drake and Kady Eller have earned Diver of the Week awards and will look to make a run at a diving title.
• South Dakota's Stella Fairbanks racked up the most diver of the week honors this season. Fairbanks has been honored five times, while two the South Dakota State men's duo of Zach Boyd, who was named last season's Diver of the Championship and Year, along with Erik Thompson, picked up two honors.
• St. Thomas will compete in its first #SummitSD Championship as a Division I member. Elizabeth Bonneville leads the Tommies in the 50 free (23.89), 100 free (52.30) and 200 free (1:52.00), while Andrew Godfrey and Peyton Ekman will lead a Tommie diving unit at the championships.
• Eastern Illinois brings back a trio of All-League honorees on the men's side from last season, including Alex Adams, Forrest Baumgartner and Jaylan Butler. The Panthers women returning from last season include Katy Black, Kennedy Darensbourg, Ashley Glesing, Camryn Lewis and Maddie Pittman.
