Omaha's Season Ends in Overtime at WMU

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – One of the better seasons in Omaha's 25 years of hockey ended Saturday.
The No. 19 Mavericks had a 3-1 second-period lead on No. 7 Western Michigan, but they later had to rally to force overtime in Game 2 of a best-of-three NCHC quarterfinal series. Drew Worrad scored 4:42 into the extra period to send the Broncos on to the Frozen Faceoff while also ending Omaha's season.
The Mavericks (21-17) finished with their highest victory total under Mike Gabinet while also matching the second-best win total in school history. Only the 2000-01 team, which posted 24 wins, recorded more.
Omaha got power-play goals from Kevin Conley and Jonny Tychonick in the first 18 minutes to take a 2-1 lead to the first intermission Saturday at Lawson Arena. Nolan Sullivan then redirected a shot by Brock Bremer past Western Michigan goaltender Brandon Bussi 4:48 into the second to make it a 3-1 game.
The Broncos (24-10-1) responded with a flurry, scoring three times in five minutes to move in front 4-3. Ronnie Attard tied the game 34 seconds after Jason Polin sparked the WMU rally. Worrad's first goal of the night, with 1:53 left in the second period, gave Western Michigan a 4-3 advantage after 40 minutes.
The Mavericks pulled even when Jack Randl put back a rebound on a rush with 9:13 left in regulation. The game moved into a five-on-five, sudden-death overtime after neither team scored after.
Worrad's game-winner came moments after he won a faceoff in the extra period to goaltender Isaiah Saville's left. After teammate Cole Gallant passed by the puck, he fired it into the net to end the game.
Conley and Tychonick each finished with a goal and an assist for Omaha. Saville recorded 29 saves.
