Mavericks Open 2022 Season at Augustana Twilight Meet
Aug 31, 2022 | Cross Country
The Omaha cross country team is prepped to open the 2022 running season tomorrow night at the Augustana Twilight meet at Yankton Trails in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Mavericks will be participating in the 5K event beginning at 8:30 p.m.
On Tuesday, Omaha was picked to finish 7th in the Summit League Preseason Poll. Incoming freshman Kamryn Ensley and senior returner Maya Nachtigal were both selected as Preseason Athletes to Watch.
"As we head into this Fall 22' season, we are poised to have one of the best cross-country seasons since moving to the Division I level," Mavericks head coach Cliff Cisar said. "We have a great mix of experienced and committed upperclassmen while on the other hand, an intriguing and talented group of incomers that will help provide much more depth than our team has historically had."
Of those experienced and committed upperclassmen, Nachtigal and senior Danielle Howard will look to continue what they started after stellar 2021 seasons. Nachtigal ran in all six races for the Mavericks and led the way for Omaha in all of them. She set personal records in the 5K and 6k last season. Running 18:37.3 at the Greeno Dirksen Invite on September 18th and 22:34.1 at the Bradley Pink Classic on October 15, 2021. Howard never finished worse than third among all Maverick runners throughout the 2021 six race season. Howard, a native of Sioux Falls, S.D., PR'd in both the 5K and 6K last season just like her distance teammate Nachtigal. She ran a mark of 19:21.1 in the 5K at the 2021 Greeno Dirksen Invite and 23:48.8 in the 6K at the Bradley Pink Classic.
"This roster is a special one. Not only is it the largest one we've ever had, but arguably the most talented one from top to bottom," Cisar said of the 19 runner roster. "Each training session we've had thus far has been impressive. I know the team is excited to start racing to really get a measure on where they are currently and to get a glimpse of where we can go as the season progresses."
